Phonics RWI

Read Write Inc, Our Phonics Approach

At Hughenden, we aim for all our children to become fluent, confident readers who are passionate about reading.

Children who read regularly or are read to regularly have the opportunity to open the doors to so many different worlds! More importantly, reading will give your child the tools to become independent life-long learners.

We can achieve this together through:

  • Read Write Inc, a program to help to your child read at school
  • Encouraging children to develop a love of books by reading to them daily, at home and at school
  • Giving children access to a wide range of books at school and at home.

At Hughenden, we use Read Write Inc Phonics (RWI) to give your child the best possible start with their literacy.

Phonics is used to teach children how to decode, blend and learn to read.  The Read Write Inc approach is a nationally recognised model.  At Hughenden, we take the 2 classes in Foundation/Year 1 and split them into smaller groups to target children to enable accelerated progress.  Children are reassessed a regular time points and groups changed accordingly.

We want to ensure that every child is confident in phonics so they can access reading, the curriculum and more importantly the world around them.

The Phonics Screening Check

During the Summer term in Year 1, children nationwide are tested on their phonic knowledge. This test helps us to identify children who have gaps in their phonic knowledge and may need further support in Year 2. The test is low-key and we endeavour to make it stress-free for the children. Essentially, the children are asked to read 40 words from a list, using their phonics to ‘sound out’ the word and then blend it if they need to. Parents are informed as to whether their child has achieved the national expectation within the child’s end-of-year report.
